Hi mum I’m on TV!!!

Mark Sainsbury and random Kiwis outside Buckingham Palace

Today I made and appearance on Close Up (click this to see the video while it is up) an evening current affairs show in NZ.

Yesterday Cam sent around an email asking if anyone was willing to get up at 6am to head down to Buckingham Palace to participate in a news show about Sir Edmund Hillary. I was the only one dumb enough to do it and was dutifully up at 6am and on my bike 5 minutes later. When we go there it turned out to be a piece about an English guy and a Kiwi girl who dated 27 years ago and are now getting back together. It was kinda sweet and at the same time kinda weird and I got the feeling they were a bit nuts.

My guess is that Mark Sainsbury (the TV presenter with the pink tie and huge soup strainer in the middle) got permission to head to London for the Sir Edmund Hillary memorial yesterday and they decided to make the most of the air fares by getting him to do some Kiwi interest stories for the rest of the week.

If this is Wednesday’s story I think it is going to be a slow news week indeed.

That being said though we met some nice people (of course they were nice they were Kiwis!) and had a few laughs.

Two of the nicest people we met were an English girl and a Kiwi guy who are married couple with two children together who have been together for 5 years. They recently applied for the husband to get a UK visa and UK Home Office said they were faking their marriage to get him a visa and the kids were just part of their elaborate plan. They have no right to appeal. That should have been the news story!

Something fun to do on an otherwise ‘normal’ London working day. How cool to be at Buckingham without the normal huge crowds of tourists.

However I have a feeling if there was alcohol on offer no matter what time of day there would have been hoards (hundreds) of expat Kiwi’s resembling those who turn up for the Waitangi Day Pub Crawl! ;)

The old folks story is weirdly wonderful although the situation for the couple with kids sounds really unfortunate. They were obviously sidelined for the light and fluffy story but at least Dad got to have a say on TV (albeit brief) for his family. Their situation is really messed up, what kind of crazy people run the office? Who the hell has kids for the sake of a visa? There’s a lot more involved in giving birth and raising children - being a female I can’t believe anyone would have babies and make a lifetime commitment just for a visa. Its not like NZ is a third world country and they’re desperate for salvation in the UK?! I can’t believe anyone would just have kids to get a visa? Especially considering the UK is the mothers home country? Madness. Must of been a ruling by idiots who don’t have children or theirs something more to the story…

Regardless congrats, Carl, Cam-o-Bear, Jo and Becster (adopted Kiwi) for getting up with the birds to say hello to your mother’s and mother country.

Fun stuff….from ‘Mum’, Ellen and ‘Himself’. Sad story about Visa….wonder if the romance of 27 years will last? You got up EARLY….you looked GOOD on NZ TV…love, the 3 of us….departing for CHCH in AM

Whilst I may have been misled by TVNZ over the reasons for the live feed back to NZ i still enjoyed going down there and being on TV. My parents saw me which means I don’t have to go homenow for another 2 years!! Cheapest way of keeping in touch I’ve ever found!

    Bring on ANZAC Day.

    Yeah mine too!

And you can’t really be held accountable for the dire state of “the news” in NZ Cam.
